Dolphin Days
Greatest Hits #0821
When I look back at some of my favorite photos of all time, most are unexpected. Perhaps I got lucky at a new location or on a repeat trip, and scored, but some are the result of years of observations. I would say this photo is 10 years in the making, over 10 years of being at the beach, learning the conditions, patterns, swell etc.Β
It was a classic winter day at OB. The dolphins are charging, the sun is out, double overhead + and absolutely firing. The swell was big enough for the βtop of the hill shotβ so there I was all morning. I saw the lines, corduroy all the way to the Farallon Islands. I was watching a set of lines forming on the outer outer bar. It was the set of the decade, producing an A frame in the middle of the ocean. And that was it, there was not another set that came close to breaking the way it did.Β
Photographing OB for 10 years and to witness and capture this one moment, which didnβt last more than a few seconds, cannot be described in words. Mother Nature showing all her glory. This is one the few photos I have printed for myself which hangs on metal in my kitchen reminding me that there is no place like home.Β
