Hong Kong

I’ve been watching these city scenes online year after year on DigitalRev TV. I’m sure if you’re a photographer and been on YouTube you have heard of them. I have never really done any street photography myself, but always something I wanted to try. As I walked through Mong Kok emerging from the subway station into Hong Kong for the first time, the scenes I vividly memorized in my head came alive, the bustling street market where it was so congested I was shoulder to shoulder with everyone else. Hong Kong-ers don’t seem to be alarmed by photographers compared to mainland China, I felt I was in a part of a DRTV video. When you seen somewhere on a screen over and over and then to actually be there, in person, is an other worldly feeling. I remember waking up on my cousin’s couch, looking out the window, seeing a “boring block of characterless chunk of modern apartment blocks“, and experiencing a sudden state of euphoria. I’ll never forget that moment.
