Everywhere Is Epic

Sometimes I get stuck sitting in front of the computer seeing if there is anywhere to go. I always think to myself: there is nowhere interesting; I’ve already exhausted everything around here; the weather forecast doesn’t look good; that’s a long ass drive; maybe I should just stay home and be lazy. Even with 9 days off from work for the first time, I was still giving myself excuses not to travel. 

And then I decided to just pick a single location and just go. 

The moment I started driving, I saw wildflowers on the side of the road. The macro world opened up. Less than half way to my destination, I was already filling up my memory card. As I drove on new roads, I found myself stoping at every pull out and running around taking photos. The middle of the barren desert was flourishing in colors of wildflowers. Sunset light illuminated the landscape and turned it other worldly. There were all kinds of interesting rocks on the side of the road. I could spend all day there collecting! I need more time to capture it all. It was epic everywhere.

These are places you will never see on social media or Google Maps. You’ll never know they exist if you are sitting at home in front of a computer. The only way to know is to go.

I remember I was going to do some tide pool photography on the north coast. The forecast said dense foggy drizzle which is typically not good for photography. Nope! It was still epic. It was actually better than broad daylight. What the?! The lighting was dynamic and moody and did not blow out the scene.

The more I just decide to drive into the mountains or, anywhere really, the more I realize that beauty is all around. Sometimes, you just have to go and not worry about the weather forecast, the traffic, the crowds, your predispositions. I always find something that intrigues me no matter where I go. There is always something out there worth photographing, but you have to be out there.

Everywhere is epic is you just go.
