Feels Like Fall. September 2021

After one of the gloomiest summers ever, Karl the Fog finally decided to leave town in the midst of the night. 

You know it is the first day of fall (or start of summer in SF) when the daily high temperature rises above 70F along the coast and there is not a cloud in the sky. The first ground swell showed up along with the first offshore wind of the season; surfers racing to the get their session in before the work day.

It was a magical morning with the dawn color palette, the moon setting right at sunrise, pelican formations, and spotting fickle a-frames. I remember when I was back in high school, the best weather would always coincide with the first week of school and all I wanted to do was be at the beach. Luckily working from home today, I got to witness the lunch time glass off and then enjoy the evening dolphin show. 

There’s no place like home. 

December 25, 2020 Merry Christmas

Last night, I had a feeling that sunrise was going to be good so I charged up my batteries and had my camera ready to go. I set my alarm for 6:45am but I knew it was going to be very hard not to hit the snooze button especially on a cold winter day. When I peeked out my window before dawn, it looked completed overcast and I couldn’t see a slit on the horizon (usually indicates an epic sunrise), so as expected, I fell back asleep. About 10 minutes after seven, I woke up again to a glaring orange glow out my window. The sunrise colors looked very concentrated toward the east. As I sluggishly pulled myself out of bed, I looked out my living room window and saw a double rainbow intensifying. I knew it! What a way to start the day; I can’t think of a better present to wake up to.

Winter came early this year and the season is off to a good start. Light to moderate offshores accompanied with a solid drop in air temps and pumping swell created the classic blue green hues of winter at Ocean Beach. It’s one of those days where I can’t stop staring at the waves, watching peak after peak, surfers maneuver the closeout sections and occasionally make it out of a barrel. The A-frames were groomed all day and peeling into the night, and as a cherry on top, the local dolphin pod appeared unexpectedly and ecstatically claimed the set of the day.
